Dambura, also danbura, is a fretless two-stringed long-necked lute that is played in northern Afghanistan especially for entertainment in teahouses as a soloist or in a small ensemble to accompany folk songs. A singer often accompanies himself on the dambura. In a teahouse ensemble, the dambura player typically performs with two singers. Both strings are usually struck simultaneously with the fingers up and down. The melody played only on the upper string is accompanied by a drone on the empty lower string.
