Unique rarecollectible chess set. White & cobalt blue. Handpainted 24k gold accents. Hand made in town of Verbilki near Moscow in Russia at the famous Gardner factory. This chess is is in like new condition. There are no chips or cracks that I have been able to find. Fantastic piece of Gardner Porcelain craftsmanship. PARTIAL HISTORY The Gardner porcelain factory is named after the Englishman, Francis Gardner, who arrived in Russia in mid 18th century with the business plan to manufacture porcelain. The place where he chose to open the factory was a small town Verbilky in Moscow suburbs. In 1723 Peter the Great, the Russian Czar issued a decree to support porcelain manufactures in Russia. Permission was required to open a factory and that permission was issued to Gardner in 1766. Gardner did not wait for that permission and began producing porcelain before that date. In order not to be noticed, Gardner used the logo of Meissen porcelain. This was not entirely false since Meissen masters were working for Gardner . Once the permission was issued, Gardner decided to start advertising.The best one at that time was that Czar's court used the manufactured items. So, he gave a present to the Russian Czarina - at that time Katherine II, which she loved so much that she ordered more. That was the start of Gardner’s success. Gardner continued with Meissen copies., though as time went on, Gardner produced more true Russian themed porcelain, such as items based on Russian fairy tales. In 1891 the factory was sold to the Russian businessman, M. C. Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov's policy was to produce porcelain for the masses and the factory began to produce items for everyday use. Kuznetsov continued to use Gardner's logo, despite the change of ownership. Even now the most elite, hand-made items produced at Verbilki have that old Gardner logo. During October revolution 1917 factory was taken over by Bolsheviks. After 1991 when Russia became free once again factory was rebuilt & privatized. Porcelain produced at Gardener factory is considered to be one of European Royal porcelains & any object made at Gardner factory is a rare collectible item... This chess set includes a porcelain board which is made up from two separate boards about 8"x15" each for a total size 16"x15" when put together. It was produced and sold in very small quantities. This chess set is about 20 years old. 32 porcelain chess pieces are from 2 3/4"H to 3"H.
